Illuminating Spectra - Part 2:  Has my sample got any starch?!

In many cases, it is fairly straightforward to spot a high starch content in your sample if you look carefully at its NIR spectrum. Here is one we made earlier... it shows two feed samples with low (blue line) and high (green line) starch content (around 1% and 60% respectively).


The smooth bump around 2100 nm is where starch band is located. 

Notice the dip created by the lack of starch in the blue spectrum exposing protein shoulders on either side (we will have a separate blog post on protein soon).

See if you can find which sample has higher oil content (refer to Illuminating Spectra Part 1 if this doesn’t ring a bell).

(Just be aware that this is a guideline that we use for solid agricultural samples. From time to time you might encounter samples that don’t react in the same way depending on specific sample composition.)
